Hello everyone,

I have received many private posts of encouragement, support and also positive criticism, thanks to everyone.

Among all those messages there was one that made me think a lot about the decision of creating this forum in this place. Forumotion allows to create a board forum in a relatively easy way but has a big handicap: not even the administrators have access to the data base. That means in case they decide to close this service one day we could loose all the stored messages.
This risk is inherent to any third parties internet services, could happen the same in Google, Yahoo or any other.

Why forumotion then? I had some reasons:

1. Is cost free.
2. Nobody needs to deal with updates of the forum, including security updates. And they keep it updated to the latest versions.
3. I have been running the spanish forum in the same host for 3 years without any problem.
4. They keep adding new services.
5. Because is easy to administrate people with little technical knowledge can work in the administration without complications. This way more people can get involved in the developement of the forum.

What would be ideal then?
Someone with the time and knowledge to search for a web host, install and configure a phpBB based forum, make frequent security back-ups and then administrate it as a team since peoples' hardware (and software) could also fail.
If someone is able to do that it would be more suitable than this forum. Personally I do not want to deal with all that work (at least at the present) since my time is limited and I already have more than enough with this.

Until then (if ever someone makes such a forum) what we have?
We have this forum running and working and we can use and enjoy it right now.

Finally, I think not every message is worthy of storage, most messages could be deleted without problem, in others the contents get outdated after a while. We could make a selection of the few really worthy messages to preserve and keep a copy of them as txt pdf word or whatever format and keep then organized in a database.

Any ideas?

Francisco

Francisco,

With Passiflora-L, I deleted most messages after reading. Those with good information, or discussions which I found interesting enough to keep, I always copied and pasted into a Word document, and named it, to file in my Passiflora folder. I could then retrieve it anytime I wished to review something. It was very simple and effective, taking 30 seconds to complete.

My plan, therefore, was to do the same thing here. I had no concerns about data storage, as I already decided to store the topics of interest on my own computer.

I personally see no reason why this should cause any concern.

I do have a slightly unrelated question, however. Will all the pictures from the Passilfora-L have a home, and can it be here somehow?

Kind regards,
Eric Wortman

Thank you Eric for the feedback.

I added a link in the headers & navigation bar of the forum named "FloraPix" that points to the Passiflora-L gallery.
Is all I can do right now since the pics belong to many different people and some of them probably would not like to see their pics in here without consent.

Best Regards,
Francisco
